Reasons for project failure

An expert wanted to explain the reasons for the failure of many projects in a simple and funny way. He said: If we assume that we are a car factory, and a customer comes to us asking us to build him a car that is red, has two doors, no roof, and the engine, for example, is 350 horsepower. That is, the customer showed us the product he wanted to get. So we gave this vision to the financial management, so they set a budget for us to allow the production of a motorcycle. So we gave this vision to the engineering department, and they set a timetable in which we could hardly produce a bicycle. So we gave this vision to the technical and technical department, so they developed an engine design suitable for a space shuttle. As a result of all those mistakes, what does that customer get at the end of the project? Get a sandcart. Although the customer expected that he would get a car with the specifications he mentioned and drew a beautiful picture of the product he wanted to get, but when the project was completed, he got a sand cart.

You may be surprised by this model, but it happens a lot; So the customer says “This is something completely different from what I wanted” .. “I imagined a completely different website” … “I imagined a completely different villa” … “I imagined the services provided to me are completely different” … Then why did that failure happen.

The most important reasons for the failure of projects

First: miscommunication

As if each of them spoke a different language, as if they did not understand each other and what the other wanted. So, the existence of a communication problem is one of the most important reasons for the failure of projects, when there is miscommunication or absence of communication.

Secondly, poor planning

A schedule and budget must be established and appropriate planning skills must be available; In order not to eventually produce an incorrect or unappliable plan.

Of course, there are other reasons. KPMG, a well-known consulting firm, put out a survey in 1997 and found that the top three reasons projects fail are:

1- Poor project planning

Poor planning. There are no competencies in planning. So the plans are all unrealistic plans, incorrect plans, which lead to catastrophic failure.

2- Weak Business Case or Feasibility Study

This is also something that happens a lot. Some companies do projects without knowing why they are implementing this project. For example, some companies say we want to update our network. What is the goal of updating the network? What abilities do we want to have? What are the desired results? There is no clear business case: why? What's the reason? Thus, when there is a project without a reason, and without a clear goal, it is also often the fate of that project to fail.

3- Insufficient Involvement by Senior Management

That is, the lack of follow-up and care of the senior management, and the project is left without attention, and without care, and the project is often doomed to failure.
